(And Why Everyone’s Talking About It)
So, you want to print cool, custom designs on t-shirts, hoodies, bags—or pretty much anything, right? Well, say hello to your new favorite method: DTF printing (that’s Direct-to-Film, btw 😉).
Whether you’re running a small business, making shirts for fun, or just tired of the old ways like vinyl or transfer paper, DTF is here to shake things up—and for good reason.
🌟 What Is DTF Printing?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a cutting-edge printing technology that turns virtually any design you can create into a vibrant, super-durable, ready to press transfer. We print your designs onto a special film, apply a hot-melt adhesive powder and then pass through a special curing oven. This creates a sheet of transfers ready for you to apply directly onto garments using a heat press.
Unlike older methods that require precise contour cutting, weeding, or limit you with substrate types, DTF offers unmatched flexibility and efficiency.
It works like a charm on cotton, polyester, blends, light or dark fabrics, and gives you bright, bold, durable prints that feel soft and last wash after wash.
Why DTF Is Better Than Vinyl, Sublimation & Transfer Paper
Let’s break it down, shall we?
📜 DTF vs Transfer Paper: No More Cracks or Peels
Transfer paper is great if you’re just getting started and want the flexibility of doing one-off pieces on demand using your inkjet printer. Infact we’ve got a great range of the world’s best Neenah Transfer Papers which are great for this. But it cracks, peels, doesn’t play nice with some fabrics and requires different papers for light and dark fabrics. DTF? It gives you high-quality, long-lasting prints with vibrant colors—on almost any fabric.
✂️ DTF vs Vinyl: Bye-Bye Weeding!
Vinyl has a very loyal following and there are some ways it can’t be beat. You can get a huge range of unique textures and patterns like metallics, glitters and even 3D Puff. But unless you want to spend time layering (and don’t mind a heavier, thicker feel to your design), you’re limited to the 1 colour you choose. And the entire production process requires your time and effort. For some, an hour spent weeding vinyl is therapeutic, but for many it’s a pain. Need to produce large volumes? Soooo inefficient. DTF printing skips all that. No cutting. No layering. Just send us your designs, spend your time on other more productive things while we print, then just press and go once you’ve received your designs. You can do full-color, photorealistic designs with zero hassle, and get beautifully soft, long-lasting results.
👚 DTF vs Sublimation: Works on Cotton? Yes, Please!
Sublimation is great – nothing beats it for that soft hand feel. And it’s super accessible – just grab a printer and you’re ready to become a sublimation superstar….as long as your plan is to only offer printing on white polyester. DTF doesn’t play by those rules. Unlike sublimation printing, DTF uses White ink in the printing process, which means your designs can be applied to dark fabrics, and the magical adhesive properties of DTF mean that you can apply your designs to virtually any fabric or garment. No special coatings or limited color options here!
